Thai Nguyen (English spelling)

The capital of Thai Nguyen Province in northern Vietnam. It is located 75 km north of the capital Hanoi, on the right bank of the Cau River, a tributary of the Song Khoi River. National Highway 3 runs through the city. Population 132,200 (2003 estimate). The Linh Nham iron mine and the Phan Me coal mine were developed during the colonial period, and in 1963 Vietnam's largest steel complex was built with assistance from China. The city was bombed by the US military during the Vietnam War, but was rapidly rebuilt after the war. There are thermal power plants, machinery factories, paper factories, etc. on the outskirts. Many Thai people live in the surrounding area.

ベトナム北部、タイグエン省の省都。首都ハノイの北75キロメートル、ソンコイ川支流のカウ川右岸に位置する。国道3号線が通じる。人口13万2200(2003推計)。植民地時代からリンニャム鉄山やファンメ炭鉱が開発されていたが、1963年中国の援助を受けてベトナム最大の鉄鋼コンビナートが建設された。ベトナム戦争中はアメリカ軍の爆撃を受けたが、戦後は急速に復興している。郊外には火力発電所、機械、製紙などの工場もある。周辺はタイ人が多く居住する。
