Japanese: ダイエー[株] - ダイエー
Daiei [Stock] - Daiei
A supermarket. Nakauchi Isao (1922-2005) founded Daiei Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. in 1957 and opened Shufu no Mise Daiei in Osaka. It was renamed Shufu no Mise in 1959, Shufu no Mise Daiei in 1962, and took its current name in 1970. It gained popularity for its low prices and became a leader in the distribution revolution. In 1964, it expanded into Tokyo, and opened stores nationwide. In 1972, it overtook Mitsukoshi to become the top retailer (it became the first retailer to surpass 1 trillion yen in sales in 1980). It has the characteristics of a general merchandise store. It was a spectacular operation, with the launch of Orange Page in 1985, the launch of the Fukuoka Daiei Hawks in 1988, the opening of Fukuoka Dome in 1993, and the absorption and merger of Chujitsuya and Dynaha in 1994, but consumer slump during the Heisei recession continued and the company fell into the red in the February 1998 period. The company closed unprofitable stores and implemented restructuring measures to rebuild. It also began restructuring the group, including the establishment of a holding company. President Nakauchi retired in January 1999 (and resigned as director in December 2000). From December 2004, with the support of the Industrial Revitalization Corporation of Japan, the company implemented large-scale restructuring, including the mass closure of unprofitable stores, and in 2006, Marubeni became the largest shareholder. In 2007, the company accepted capital from AEON, and under the umbrella of AEON and Marubeni, the company attempted to rebuild its business. In 2005, SoftBank took over the professional baseball team, the Fukuoka Daiei Hawks. The head office is in Tokyo, and the number of stores is 99 (as of 2011). Capital in 2011 was 56.5 billion yen, and sales for the fiscal year ending February 2011 were 911.8 billion yen.
