Peninsula - Hanto (English spelling)

A long part of land that juts out into the sea or lake. Large peninsulas include the Arabian Peninsula, Indian Peninsula, and Balkan Peninsula, while small ones include the Miura Peninsula (Kanagawa Prefecture), Oga Peninsula (Akita Prefecture), Noto Peninsula (Ishikawa Prefecture), and Sadamisaki Peninsula (Ehime Prefecture) in Japan, among many others. Size is generally relative, so the European continent corresponds to the peninsula of the Eurasian continent. Peninsulas such as Scandinavia in northern Europe, Iberia in southwestern Europe, and Italy are European peninsulas. The smallest ones are peninsulas that remain as peninsulas because the land submerged, leaving only the ridges. Many of these are not called peninsulas.

陸地が海や湖へ長く突出している部分。大規模な半島としては、アラビア半島、インド半島、バルカン半島などがあり、小規模なものとしては日本の三浦半島（神奈川県）、男鹿(おが)半島（秋田県）、能登(のと)半島（石川県）、佐田岬(さだみさき)半島（愛媛県）などきわめて多い。大小の規模は一般に相対的なものであるから、ヨーロッパ大陸はユーラシア大陸の半島にあたる。北ヨーロッパのスカンジナビア、ヨーロッパ南西部のイベリア、イタリアなどの半島はヨーロッパの半島である。もっとも小規模なものは、陸地が沈水したために尾根部分が半島状に残ったもので、半島という呼称がつけられていないものが多い。
