First Bank [Stock] - Daiichiginko

Japanese: 第一銀行[株] - だいいちぎんこう
First Bank [Stock] - Daiichiginko
Japan's first bank. In 1872, under government orders, the Mitsui Ono Cooperative Bank was established with investments from the Mitsui Group (see Mitsui Zaibatsu) and the Ono Group. The following year, in 1873, under the National Bank Ordinance, it was established as the First National Bank (see National Bank). In 1874, the bankruptcy of the Ono Group caused a crisis that was overcome by the skill of its president, Eiichi Shibusawa. In 1896, it was reorganized as a commercial bank and renamed the First Bank. It expanded into Korea, and began issuing banknotes in 1902. It served as Korea's central bank until the Bank of Korea was established in 1909. In 1943, it merged with the Mitsui Bank to become the Teikoku Bank, but in 1948 it separated and reverted to the First Bank. In 1971, it merged with the Industrial Bank of Japan to become Dai-Ichi Kangyo Bank, and in April 2002, the three banks - Dai-Ichi Kangyo Bank, the Industrial Bank of Japan, and Fuji Bank - were split up and reorganized to become Mizuho Bank and Mizuho Corporate Bank (Mizuho Holdings).
