Historian, Doctor of Literature, Professor Emeritus of Tohoku Imperial University, and Member of the Academy of Japanese Studies. Born in Tokyo. Graduated from the Department of History of Tokyo Imperial University. After serving as a lecturer and assistant professor at the same university, he became a professor at Tohoku Imperial University in 1924 (Taisho 13). During that time, he studied in France, Germany, and Italy (1920-22) to study Western medieval history. After retiring from Tohoku Imperial University in 1944, he served as a professor at Japan Women's University and Meiji University. He advocated a cultural historical perspective based on the theories of J. Burckhardt and K. Lamprecht, and had a great influence on my historical research in the early Showa period. "Studies on Castles" and "History of Japanese Castles" (co-authored) were the first systematic academic studies of the history of Japanese castles, while "Culture of the Western Middle Ages" and "Studies on the Renaissance" were groundbreaking works in their respective fields of research. Furthermore, "New Lectures on Western History" and "View of Western Cultural History" are general histories that show his cultural historical perspective, and his historical theory and methodology are described in "Modern History" and "Introduction to History". Furthermore, essay collections such as "History, Nature and People" and "Spring in Momoyama" display the doctor's aesthetic sense and historical perspective.
