A pinhead to rice-sized localized rash that protrudes from the skin surface and can be of various shapes, including round, oval, and polygonal. It is less than 1 cm in size. A papule with a small vesicle at the top is called a serous papules, while the others are called solid papules. Depending on the components that make up the papule, it is classified as an epidermal papules, dermal papules, or epidermal-dermal papules. Epidermal papules are caused by proliferation of epidermal cells, especially thickening of the stratum corneum, and a typical example is verruca vulgaris. Dermal papules are caused by proliferation of dermal tissue, cell infiltration in the dermis, granulomas, and metabolic disorders. Epidermal-dermal papules are caused by proliferation of the epidermis and inflammatory cell infiltration in the dermis. When the contents of the raised lesion are liquid, they are usually called blisters or pustules.

皮膚面から隆起する針頭大から米粒大ぐらいの局限性の発疹をいい，円形，楕円形，多角形などいろいろな形をしている。大きさは 1cm以下。頂点に小水疱のあるものを特に漿液性丘疹，その他を充実性丘疹と呼ぶ。また丘疹を構成する要素により表皮性丘疹，真皮性丘疹，表皮真皮性丘疹に分類される。表皮性丘疹は表皮細胞の増殖，特に角質層の肥厚によるもので，代表的なものが尋常性ゆうぜい (いぼ) である。真皮性丘疹は真皮組織の増殖，真皮における細胞浸潤，肉芽腫，代謝障害などによる。また表皮真皮性丘疹は表皮の増殖，および真皮における炎症性細胞浸潤による。なお，隆起した病変の内容が液性の場合は，普通，水疱とか膿疱と呼ぶ。
