Fyodor Kuzmich Sologub

Fyodor Kuzmich Sologub

Russian novelist and poet. His real name was Tetelnikov. Born as the son of a poor artisan in St. Petersburg, he suffered poverty and obscurity for a long time, but suddenly gained fame with his novel "The Little Devil" (1905). His novelistic technique, incorporating surreal elements and eroticism into his narration, suggests his intention to break away from the traditional realism of Russian prose art. In poetry, he disliked ambiguous expressions and sought symbolism in the content under a short and concise form. His works, which are a subtle mixture of idealism and demonism, longing for freedom and beauty, and praising sex and death, were popular among young decadents and he was influential as a representative of symbolism, but he died in despair after the revolution. In addition to his poetry collections, he is famous for his play "The Triumph of Death" (1908) and novel "The Magic of Ghosts" (1908).
