Inscriptions discovered in 1889 in the Orkhon River basin south of Lake Baikal. Two stone inscriptions dated 732 and 735 were deciphered by V. Thomsen of Denmark on September 25, 1893, along with the Yenisei inscription, and it was discovered that they are the oldest known inscriptions written in Turkish. The first one was a monument to the crown prince Kyor Tegin (闕特勤), and the second one was a monument to the ruler Bilge Khagan (毗輽可漢). Other inscriptions collectively referred to as Orkhon inscriptions include the Tonyukuk inscription on the Tola River, the Ongin inscription on the Ongin River, and the Ikhe-Hoshotu inscription on the Ikhe-Hoshotu River. This has shed considerable light on the state of Turkish (also called Turkic or Orkhon Turkish) in the 8th century, and it has been discovered that it preserves the / * ç / and initial / * b / that are believed to have existed in Proto-Turkic.
