Sorrento (English spelling)
A city in the province of Naples in Campania, southern Italy. Facing an inlet at the mouth of the Bay of Naples, it is connected by boat to Naples and the island of Capri, off the southern coast of the Bay of Naples. It has been called Slentum since Roman times and known as a resort. It is the birthplace of the poet T. Tasso. It produces oranges, lemons, wine, and other products, but is blessed with a pleasant Mediterranean climate and is famous as a tourist and resort in both summer and winter. Many poets and painters have visited or stayed here since ancient times. It has the Marble Cathedral (1479), the church of the monastery of St. Francis of Assisi, founded in the 14th century, and the famous Terranova Museum, which houses a collection of medieval sculptures and paintings. Population 17,015 (estimated 1991).
