[Western theater architecture]
The prototype of European theater architecture that continues to this day was perfected in ancient Greece. Greek theaters of the 5th century BC consisted of a circular, flat floor (orchestra) for the performance space, surrounded by a sloped auditorium (theatre, the origin of the word theater).
