The name of Islamic merchants who were active in the spice trade via the Red Sea from the Ayyubid period to the middle of the Mamluk period. The word Kārimī, from which it is derived, means "cargo ship" or "group of shipowners" and was already in use since the Fatimid period, but there are many unknowns about its origin. They formed a merchant guild under a leader called the "chief of Kārimi," and in addition to owning their own ships, they set up their own trading posts in major cities along the trade routes, which they used as trading places, warehouses, and lodgings.
