Born: March 6, 1492 in Valencia Died May 6, 1540, Bruges. Spanish humanist. He excelled in education, philosophy, and psychology, and had a great influence on later generations of scholars. He studied in Paris from 1509 to 1512, and became professor of humanities at Louvain in 1519. He went to England in 1523 to be welcomed as tutor to the princess, and also served as professor of philosophy at Oxford University. In 1527, he was imprisoned for opposing Henry VIII's divorce, but after that he went to the Netherlands and devoted himself to writing. His main works include De ratione studii puerilis (1523), Introductio ad sapientiam (English translation 40), and De disciplinis libri XX (20 treatises on the cultivation of the soul). He is also called the father of modern psychology, and his main work in this field is De anima et vita libri tres (38).
