A mountain towering over the western border between Oita and Miyazaki prefectures. It is the main peak of the Kyushu mountain range and has a beautiful pyramidal shape. It is 1,756 meters above sea level. It is part of Sobokatamuki Quasi-National Park. It is so named because it enshrines Toyotamahime, the imperial grandmother of Emperor Jimmu. The base of the mountain is the Chichibu Mesozoic and Paleozoic layers, which are mainly composed of Neogene Sobo volcanic rocks, with some granite intrusions and tin ore. At an elevation of 1,100 to 1,200 meters, the upper part is covered with broadleaf trees, mainly beech, and the lower part is rich in conifers such as fir, hemlock, and red pine, and is home to dormice, flying squirrels, and Japanese serows (a special natural monument). The splendor of the autumn foliage and the view was introduced by the Englishman Walter Weston, who climbed the mountain in 1890 (Meiji 23), but it has not yet become widely known. It takes four hours on foot from the Kobaru trailhead to the summit. [Shunichi Kaneko] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
