Kanbun and Enpo land survey

Japanese: 寛文･延宝検地 - かんぶんえんぽうけんち

Land surveys were carried out in the Kanbun and Enpo eras (1661-81), mainly in the Kanto and Kinai territories. The aim of these land surveys was for feudal lords to directly control small farmers who had become independent based on the development of agricultural productivity since the early modern period, as the bearers of annual product taxes based on rice. Therefore, this was a land survey that aimed to directly enforce the rice yield system, the basic principle of the feudal domain system, on producers. In the first half of the 17th century, while product rent, mainly rice, was positioned as the basic rent, labor rent, mainly for war labor, coexisted as a secondary rent.

寛文～延宝期(1661‐81)に関東および畿内の天領を中心にして実施された検地。この検地のねらいは，近世初頭以来の農業生産力の発展を基礎にして自立した小農を，米納を基軸にした生産物年貢の負担者として領主が直接に掌握しようとするものであった。したがって幕藩体制社会の基本原理たる石高制を直接生産者のもとに貫徹させてゆく検地であった。17世紀前半期には，米を中心にした生産物地代が基本的な地代に位置づけられながらも，同時に副次的な地代として陣夫役を中心にした労働地代が併存していた。
