Kabuki kyogen. Sewamono. 4 acts. Commonly known as "Yaoya Oshichi" and "Tennin Oshichi." Written by Fukumori Kyusuke. It was first performed at the Morita-za in Edo in March 1809 (Bunka 6), with Iwai Hanshiro V as Oshichi, Onoe Eizaburo (later Kikugorou III) as Kichisaburo, Sawamura Shirogoro as Beniya Chobei, and Bando Mitsugoro III as Dozaemon Denkichi. After "Yaoya Oshichi Koi Edosome" (first performed at the Nakamura-za in Edo in July 1766) written by Dontsu Yozabei (Tsuuchi Jibei III) and others, a work with the same title was revised by Sakurada Jisuke I and others and performed at the Nakamura-za in May 1778 (An'ei 7). This work is a further revision of that work and can be said to be a compilation of the three Oshichi-kichi plays. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
