Salt pillow

...Salt domes in the Gulf of Mexico are particularly important structures in relation to the formation of oil fields. The external shapes of salt domes vary from salt pillows, which indicate the early stages of growth, to mushroom-shaped salt plugs and long salt walls, and their interiors have extremely complex structures as a result of the plastic flow of salt. Other types of diapirs include shale diapirs, granite diapirs, and gneiss domes, all of which are thought to be formed by density inversions occurring in the crust.
