A religious event seen among the Mahan people who lived in the southern part of ancient Korea. It is also interpreted as a kind of asylum. The word sutō first appeared in the Weizhi/Handen section of the Records of the Three Kingdoms. The original document is extremely simple, with only a short explanation: "Each province has its own village, which is called sutō. Large trees are erected and bells and drums are hung to serve the gods and demons. When the exiles flee into it, none of them return." This has led to many disagreements over its interpretation. Masukichi Hashimoto argues that sutō refers to a village, and that this village is a kind of asylum. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
