A village with a population of 3,353 (1979) on the Tinto River in the province of Huelva in southern Spain. Palos, along with the nearby town of Moguer (the birthplace of the poet Jimenez), was the launching point of the Age of Discovery, which began at the end of the 15th century. Columbus arrived in the village in 1485 and met Juan Pérez, abbot of La Rabida, to whom he told about his voyage plans. Seven years later, on August 3, 1492, with the support of the Catholic Monarchs, he set sail from the port of Palos and returned to the same port on March 15 of the following year. The port is now buried under sand. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
