An industrial city in northern Texas, USA. Population 452,000 (1994). Located about 50 km west of Dallas, it forms a twin city with Dallas. The population of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area is 4.21 million (1992). Oil was discovered west of the city in 1912, leading to the construction of oil refineries and oil field machinery factories, and the city became an industrial city. After World War II, aircraft manufacturing became as important as oil. A permanent settlement was established in 1843, and cityhood was established in 1873.
