A former town in Mishima County, central Niigata Prefecture. It occupies the flat land on the eastern foot of the Mishima Hills and the left bank of the downstream Shinano River, and Yoita, in the center of the town, developed as a river port and castle town. It has long been a specialty of blacksmithing hardware for carpentry tools. In January 2006, it was incorporated into Nagaoka City along with Tochio City, Teradomari Town in Mishima County, and Wajima Village. 20.05 km2 . 7,581 people (2003).
