Ge'ez. Classical Ethiopian, which belongs to the South Semitic languages along with North and South Arabia. It was established several centuries before Christ, when South Arabian speakers migrated to Ethiopia, based on the Cushitic languages. The oldest inscription dates back to the 4th century. Since the 10th century, it has been used exclusively as the religious and literary language of the Ethiopian Church. In modern Ethiopia, there are 70 to 80 languages in use, including Amharic and Tigrinya, and they are collectively called Ethiopian languages.

ゲエズ語とも。Ge'ez。南北アラビア語とともに南セム語に属する古典エチオピア語のこと。紀元前数世紀，南アラビア語の話し手がエチオピアへ移住後，クシ諸語を素地として成立した。最古の碑文は４世紀のもの。10世紀ころからエチオピア教会の宗教語や文学語としてのみ用いられている。現代エチオピアにおいては，アムハラ語，ティグリニャ語など70〜80にのぼる言語が使われており，それらを総してエチオピア諸語と呼ぶ。
