[Remains of ancient Egyptian and Mesopotamian dwellings]
Ancient Egyptian dwellings had mud-brick walls and flat roofs, but their style was divided into those built as a single dwelling and those with a courtyard. In the town of al-Lāhūn, built by Senusret II of the 12th Dynasty for the workers building the pyramids, there are close-packed housing for workers and a somewhat large construction supervisor's house with a courtyard. Around 2000 BC, in Mesopotamia, there were three types of dwellings: conical dwellings with a dome made of mud-brick, rectangular dwellings with flat roofs found in the countryside, and courtyard dwellings found in cities. …
