May Fourth Movement (English spelling)

Japanese: 五･四運動 - ごしうんどう（英語表記）Wǔ sì yùn dòng

It refers to the anti-Japanese demonstrations carried out by students in Beijing, China on May 4, 1919, and the series of patriotic movements that followed across the country. It was a landmark event in modern Chinese history, in which the power of the mass movement forced the Beijing government to refuse to sign the Treaty of Versailles, and is considered a turning point from the old democratic revolution to the new democratic revolution. When World War I ended with the victory of the Entente powers, China, which was one of the victorious nations, was full of optimism that the victory was a victory over the tyranny of axioms, and that the postwar settlement would be based on the principles of axioms at the peace conference.

1919年5月4日，中国北京の学生が敢行した反日示威運動とそれに続いて全国各地で展開された一連の愛国運動をいう。大衆運動の力によって北京政府にベルサイユ条約の調印を拒否させた中国近代史上の画期的事件で，旧民主主義革命から新民主主義革命への転換点とされる。　第1次世界大戦が協商国側の勝利におわると，戦勝国の一員に列した中国では，勝利は公理の強権に対する勝利であり，講和会議でも公理を原則に戦後処理が行われようとの楽観がみなぎった。
