〘名〙 (語源・歴史的かなづかい未詳。多く「すあひ」とするが、「すあい」とする説もある)① (━する) 売買の仲介をして利をとること。また、その利やそれを業とする人。才取り。すわい。※仮名草子・尤之双紙(1632)下「いつはる物のしなじな〈略〉物うるにすあひといふ物」※浮世草子・諸道聴耳世間猿(1766)一「過分の御知行をいただきながら、商人のすあいをとるとは武士の風上にもおかぬ奴」② (「牙婆」「女商」とも書く) 「すあいおんな(牙儈女)」の略。※七十一番職人歌合(1500頃か)四一番「すあひ。月のきる雲の衣をうり物やさふらふといふ人もかはめや」[語誌]「牙儈(がかい)」は漢籍に見える語。売買仲介の業は古くからあって、「中媒(ちゅうばい)」と称されていたことについては、「建暦二年三月二十二日宣旨」にみえる。しかし、「すわい」「すあい」の語が見られるのは、室町時代になってからである。

が‐かい ‥クヮイ【牙儈】

〘名〙 (「牙」は「互」で互市(ごし)の意、「儈」は「会」で交易の意) 中国の仲買商人。さいとり。すあい。※屑屋の籠(1887‐88)〈西村天囚〉前「当時清人(しんじん)の此地に到る者卒皆(おほむね)落弟子弟牙儈(ガカイ)の徒のみ」 〔新唐書‐張又新伝〕

すわい【牙儈】

〘名〙 「すあい(牙儈)」の変化した語。※大徳寺文書‐元亀三年(1572)一二月八日・大徳寺并諸塔頭金銀米銭出米納下帳「〔銀〕百七十五文目三分に金弐十壱文目五分に替へ、スワイニ遣之」
