This is a style of garden where you can enjoy the unfolding of space not only by looking at it from inside the building, but by wandering around the vast garden. European and Chinese gardens basically belong to this type. In Japan, due to the custom of taking off footwear inside the building, many gardens were built with the main purpose of being viewed from inside the building, such as the dry landscape gardens of the Middle Ages. However, the gardens of aristocrats in the Heian period had ponds south of the sleeping quarters and had elements of strolling gardens. However, it was in the feudal lord gardens of the Edo period that full-scale gardens appeared. The feudal lord gardens of each feudal domain, such as Korakuen in Tokyo, Ritsurin Garden in Takamatsu, and Korakuen in Okayama, were vast gardens that were completely separate from everyday life. Complex strolling paths were constructed around a large pond, and various ideas such as landscapes modeled after scenic spots in Japan and China and gathering houses were elaborately designed along these paths.

建物内から眺めるだけでなく，広大な庭の中を巡りながら空間の展開を楽しむ庭園の形式。ヨーロッパや中国の庭園は基本的にこれに属する。日本では建物内で履物を脱ぐ習慣から，中世の枯山水の庭園のように建物内から庭を眺めることを主眼とする庭も多く造られたが，平安時代の貴族の庭は，寝殿の南に池をもち，回遊式庭園の要素を備えていた。しかし，本格的なものが出現したのは江戸時代の大名庭園においてである。東京の後楽園や高松の栗林公園，岡山の後楽園などに代表される各藩の大名庭園は，日常生活からまったく独立した広大な庭が営まれた。大きな池水を中心に複雑な回遊の苑路が組立てられ，それに沿って日本や中国の名勝を模した景観や，集屋などのさまざまな趣向が凝らされている。
