A perennial plant of the Papaveraceae family (APG classification: Papaveraceae). It grows 1-2 meters tall. When the stem is cut, a yellow juice comes out. The leaves are alternate, broadly ovate, palmately lobed, and have dense white hairs on the underside. From June to August, it produces large panicles that bloom with numerous white flowers. There are no petals, but two white sepals. There are numerous stamens and one pistil. The fruit is a flat, drooping capsule. It grows in sunny places, and is distributed from Honshu to Kyushu, as well as China and Taiwan. The plant contains alkaloids, which were once used to kill maggots. There are two theories about the name: the hollow stem resembles bamboo, and the bamboo becomes soft when boiled together with this species. It is also known as Sasayakigusa and Champagiku. In Europe it is a garden plant. [Susumu Terabayashi February 17, 2020] The leaves are broadly ovate and palmately lobed. From June to August, it produces large panicles and blooms many white flowers.
