A downtown area in Nakagyo Ward, Kyoto City. Located between Kawaramachi-dori and Teramachi-dori, shops line the 500-meter north-south street that connects Sanjo-dori and Shijo-dori. Teramachi-dori is Kyogoku-oji in Heian-kyo, and Toyotomi Hideyoshi created Teramachi by gathering temples from the capital. In 1872 (Meiji 5), Makimura Masanao, who later became the governor of Kyoto Prefecture, purchased the land where the Seiganji Temple festival was held in a corner of Teramachi, as a way to restore Kyoto, which had declined after the capital was moved to Tokyo, and named it Shinkyogoku. Currently, the area is an arcade street with movie theaters, souvenir shops, restaurants, and other establishments, and is also home to Takoyakushi-do (Eifuku-ji Temple) and Nishiki Tenmangu Shrine.
