A city in central New York State, United States. Famous as a scenic tourist and recreational destination overlooking the southern end of Lake Cauga. Located about 75 km south-southwest of Syracuse. Nearby scenic spots include Buttermilk Falls, Fillmore Valley, and Watkins Valley. Major industries include computer, power chain, and gun manufacturing plants. Dairy farming and poultry farming are thriving in the surrounding area. It is the home of Cornell University, founded in 1865. The university campus covers over 28 km2 and includes farms, nature preserves, and recreational areas. Population 29,541 (1990).
