Urado Uprising

Japanese: 浦戸一揆 - うらどいっき
Urado Uprising

...The conflict between the northern and southern factions in Tosa began with the Urado Battle in January 1336 (Engen 1/Kenmu 3). During the Sengoku period, the Motoyama clan built a castle on the peninsula-shaped hill behind the castle, and from 1560 (Eiroku 3) it became a subsidiary castle of the Chosokabe clan, and then around 1591 (Tensho 19) it became the main castle, and a castle town was formed, albeit incompletely. When the Chosokabe clan was removed from their feudal domain in 1600, a rebel army led by Ichiryo Gusoku barricaded itself in the castle, but it was soon suppressed (Urato Rebellion), and Yamauchi Kazutoyo remained in the castle until it was moved to Kochi in 1603. After the castle was abandoned, Urado became a village of sailors, fishermen, and merchants, but it continued to exist as a major commercial and fishing port with its own unique characteristics, such as the establishment of the Urado Port Entrance Reform in 1590 (Genroku 3) to regulate the entry and exit of ships in order to control the sea gate of Kochi castle town.

After the Battle of Sekigahara, Yamauchi Kazutoyo, lord of Kakegawa Castle in Totomi Province, became the ruler of Tosa with 240,000 koku (red seal tax was 200,000 koku). Kazutoyo entered Urado Castle in 1601 (Keicho 6), but prior to this, the so-called Urado Rebellion broke out, in which Ichiryo Gusoku (lower-ranking vassals of the Chosokabe clan who had not yet separated into soldiers and farmers) refused to surrender and fought back, resulting in 273 deaths. After the rebellion, the upper echelons of the Chosokabe vassals left the country, while the Ichiryo Gusoku class returned to farming, realizing the separation of soldiers and farmers.
