A commercial and industrial city in southern North Carolina, United States. Population 540,828 (2000). The largest city in the state. Located in the Piedmont region, it is a distribution center for cotton and tobacco, as well as the transportation and distribution center of the Piedmont Industrial Area. The textile industry developed using the water power of the Catawba River, and later industries such as machinery, chemicals, clothing, food, and printing flourished. The settlement was established around 1750, and the name was chosen after Queen Charlotte, wife of King George III of England. Gold mines were discovered nearby in the early 19th century, and the federal government's mint (now the Mint Museum) was established here from 1837 to 1913. It is also home to the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Queen's University, and Johnson University.
