Severe abdominal pain that often occurs periodically at regular intervals. It is caused by spasms and contractions of the smooth muscles in the walls of the digestive tract, such as the stomach and intestines, or tubular organs, such as the biliary tract, renal pelvis, and ureters. Chronic appendicitis and various stones can also cause colic. As it is paroxysmal and periodic, and is affected by body position and movement, patients often place their hands on the painful area and assume a position that relaxes the affected area. Gastric colic is the most common, followed by biliary colic (gallstones). Treatment should aim to remove the cause, but analgesics and antispasmodics are also administered.
