The world's first iron steamship was built in England in 1821. The materials were processed near Birmingham, but the ship was assembled on the banks of the River Thames in London. It was 36.6m long, 5.18m wide, and had a gross tonnage of 116 tons. After completion, it was shipped to France and used for traffic on the Seine. The ship was named after the shipyard's chief engineer and the ship's owner. [Shoji Kuniaki] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
