Years of birth and death unknown. A Chinese painter active in the late 13th century, beginning of the Yuan Dynasty. His pen name was Shunju. His pen names included Yutan, Xunfeng, Xiulanwong, and Chuanwong. He was from Wuxing (Huzhou City, Zhejiang Province) and was a local tribute officer (a person who qualified to take the imperial examination) during the Jingding period (1260-1264) of the Southern Song Dynasty. At the beginning of the Yuan Dynasty, he was counted as one of the eight outstanding men of Wuxing along with Zhao Mengfu (Ziang) and others, and Ziang and others served the Yuan Dynasty, but Qian Xuan did not enter the government, instead devoting his life to poetry, calligraphy, and painting as a scholar. He specialized in landscapes, people, and birds and flowers, and is said to have studied people under Li Gonglin, landscapes under Zhao Lingrong, blue-green landscapes under Zhao Boju, and birds and flowers under Zhao Chang. All of them looked to Northern Song painters as models, and aimed to restore the style of Yuan painting. Together with Gao Kegong and others, he was part of the restoration movement of painting that was carried out in the early Yuan Dynasty by literati and scholar-official painters, including Zhao Zigong. His works include "Scroll of Snakes at the Orchid Pavilion" (Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York), and his style is realistic and emphasizes beautiful coloring. Many small pieces were introduced to Japan, and it is said that his paintings of broken branches of flowers are particularly distinctive, but there are few definite examples.
