…Recently, research into the biosynthesis of ACTH has progressed, and it has become clear that ACTH, along with lipotropin, is produced from a common precursor with a larger molecular weight, and the entire amino acid sequence of that precursor has been determined.

The medicine ACTH is made from a peptide of 39 amino acids extracted from the anterior pituitary gland of herbivorous animals, or a synthetic peptide of 24 or 18 amino acids. The 24-amino acid peptide has the same amino acid sequence as the natural peptide from 1 to 24, while the 18-amino acid peptide has only the first amino acid different.
