Eustachius

Japanese: エウスタキウス（英語表記）Eustachius

A Roman martyr. Date of birth and death unknown. Originally Placidus, an officer in the army of Emperor Trajan. According to legend, he saw a shining image of the crucifixion of Christ among the antlers of a deer he had hunted, and was converted. He was baptized and took the name Eustachius. Later, he was fired from his job and on his way to Egypt, his wife was taken hostage and his two children were kidnapped by wild animals. He was reunited with his family after many hardships, but was martyred under Emperor Hadrian by being imprisoned inside a bronze bull and burned to death.

古代ローマの殉教聖人。生没年不詳。元来はトラヤヌス帝軍の将校プラキドゥスPlacidus。伝説によれば，彼は狩りで追った鹿の角の間に，輝くキリストの磔刑（たつけい）像が現れるのを見て回心，受洗してエウスタキウスと名のった。後に職を追われてエジプトに向かう途中，妻を人質にとられ，2人の子どもを野獣にさらわれる。さまざまな苦難の後に再会するが，ハドリアヌス帝のもとで，家族ともども青銅製の雄牛の中に閉じこめられて焼かれるなどして殉教した。
