Eisai introduced Zen Buddhism from Song and founded the new temples Shofukuji in Hakata (1195, Kenkyu 6), Jufukuji in Kamakura (1199, Shoji 1), and Kenninji in Kyoto (1202, Kennin 2). It is believed that these temples introduced Song styles to their layout and parts of their architecture, but the temples' sects included esoteric Buddhism and other religions, and they avoided making them purely Zen temples. After Tofukuji in Kyoto was built by Ben'en in 1236-1273 (Kasei 2-Bun'ei 10), and Kenchoji in Kamakura by the Song monk Rankei Doryu in 1248-1250 (Hoji 2-Kencho 2), it became official for Zen temples to imitate the Song style (Song Dynasty Art).
