Cow nosed eagle ray - Cow nosed eagle ray

Cow nosed eagle ray - Cow nosed eagle ray

A general term for a family or genus of the order Rhinopteridae, or the name of one of its species. The front ends of the pectoral fins of Rhinopteridae (cownose rays) extend forward from the head to form a cephalic fin, but the left and right cephalic fins protrude from the underside of the head like plates, and the tip of the snout is concave when viewed from above. There are about seven species of cownose rays, and one species, R. javanica (flapnose ray), is known from the waters off Japan. This species lives in coastal areas and sometimes forms large schools. The width of the body disk is about 1.5 meters. The reproductive method is non-placental viviparity, and if the fetus absorbs its own egg yolk, it grows by receiving nutrition (uterine milk) from the mother. The number of young is one or two, and the body disk width is about 63 centimeters. It is found in the Ogasawara Islands, the Ryukyu Islands, Indonesian waters, the Indian Ocean, etc. It is listed as "Vulnerable" (VU) on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species (as of August 2021).
