The oldest surviving document in French is a military and diplomatic record called the "Serments de Strasbourg" (842). In the history of the French language, the period from around this time to about 1350 is usually called Old French, the period from then until about 1600 is called Middle French, and the period from then until the present is called Modern French. Old French had diphthongs, triphthongs, or affricates, and retained case declension (two cases, nominative and regulated) for nouns, articles, and adjectives, making it quite different from modern French.
