However, in the 1950s, haute couture began producing prêt-à-porter (meaning "ready to wear") in an attempt to popularize its work, and the proportion of ready-made clothes rose sharply, to over 90% of the total today. ...In France, they are called collections (also called presentation de collections), and used to be held twice a year, in spring/summer and autumn/winter. In 1954, French fashion designer Jacques Fath (1912-54) opened a prêt-à-porter (high-end ready-to-wear) department within his haute couture line, and announced that he would combine the pieces from that department with skirts from the ready-to-wear store Rodier, which sparked the rise of prêt-à-porter. After Dior's death (1957), prêt-à-porter made a strong advance. ...
