An island in the Adriatic Sea that is part of Croatia. It has an area of 276 km2 . For a long time it was under the rule of the Republic of Venice and the Austrian Habsburg Empire. Marco Polo, author of The Travels of Marco Polo, was born on this island in 1254, when it was under Venetian rule. After World War I, it became part of Yugoslavia. Currently, taking advantage of the warm climate, grapes, figs, olives, and other crops are cultivated, and shipbuilding is also thriving.
