Mistral is a strong northerly wind that blows through the Rhône River valley in France and down the northwestern coast of the Mediterranean, especially the Gulf of Lion. It is common from winter to spring and is a cold, dry wind, similar in nature to the Adriatic mullet, but somewhat milder than it.

...Winter is generally warm, but when a low pressure system coming from the west develops over the Mediterranean Sea, cold north winds blow from the inland high pressure into the Rhône Valley. This is the strong local wind called the mistral, which can tilt even windbreaks downwind, as seen in Van Gogh's painting. The second type is a continental climate (humid cool climate) dominated by inland high pressure in winter, with cold, dry winters and mostly sunny days.
