After the German withdrawal, the Makhnovist Peasant Army maintained its position as the representative of the Ukrainian peasants, and cooperated with the Bolsheviks in the battles against the Ukrainian nationalist Simon Petlyura's (1879-1926) army and the White Guard armies of Denikin and Wrangel, but later, in 1919-20, it came into fierce conflict with the Bolsheviks over the Soviet government's grain requisitioning policy.
