A marine animal of the family Caprellidae in the order Amphipoda of the class Malacostraca. It is the largest species of Caprellidae (→ Caprellidae), reaching a body length of 6cm. Its body is cylindrical, and the first antenna is almost equal to its body length. It is found relatively abundantly on eelgrass and sagamo ducks that live on the sandy bottom of shallow seas. Most individuals are uniformly green, but some are brownish in color to match their surroundings. It is distributed from Hokkaido south to Kyushu, but is more prevalent in northern Japan. 軟甲綱端脚目ワレカラ科の海産動物。ワレカラ類(→ワレカラ)中の最大種で,体長 6cmに達する。体は円筒形で,第1触角は体長にほぼ等しい。浅海の砂底に生息するアマモやスガモの上に比較的多産する。一様な緑色個体が多いが,周囲の色彩に似た褐色を帯びた個体もみられる。北海道以南九州まで分布するが,北日本に多い。(→甲殻類,節足動物,端脚類,軟甲類)
