…With the support of the local Anti-Slavery Society, he denounced slavery in Brazil on the international stage. His book On the Abolition of Slavery (1883), published during his stay in London, caused a great sensation in Brazil and contributed to the promulgation of the Partial Emancipation Law in 1885, followed by the Emancipation Law known as the Golden Law in 1888. Although he was against slavery, he was in favor of the monarchy, so after the collapse of the Empire in 1889, he retired from politics to focus on writing, and spent the last ten years of his life as a diplomat. …
