Indian Jabok - Indian Jabok

An evergreen tree of the Apocynaceae family (APG classification: Apocynaceae). It is found in India, Myanmar (Burma), Thailand, Malaysia, Java, and other areas east of Nepal. It grows to about 1 meter in height. The leaves are glossy, lanceolate, 10-15 cm long, 4-5 cm wide, wavy-edged, and arranged in opposite or whorled arrangements. The flowers are tubular with five lobes, pale pink on the outside and white on the inside. The fruits ripen to black, and contain one pale yellow seed with a net-like pattern inside. The long root, about 25 cm long, is used for medicinal purposes. The root has a bitter taste and contains the active ingredient reserpine, which has a strong sedative effect on the central nervous system and brain, and is used to treat schizophrenia. It was also used as a folk medicine for snake and poisonous insect bites, and for reducing fever.

キョウチクトウ科（APG分類：キョウチクトウ科）の常緑樹。ネパール以東のインド、ミャンマー（ビルマ）、タイ、マレー、ジャワなどに産する。高さ約1メートル。葉は光沢があり、長さ10～15センチメートル、幅4～5センチメートル、披針(ひしん)形で波縁状になり、対生または輪生する。花は筒状で5裂し、外側は淡紅色、内側は白色。果実は黒く熟し、中に淡黄色で網状紋様のある種子が1個ある。長さ25センチメートルほどの長い根を薬用にする。根は苦味があり、薬効成分はレセルピンで、中枢神経と脳に強い鎮静作用を示し、統合失調症（精神分裂病）の治療に用いる。また、民間薬としてヘビや毒虫の咬傷(こうしょう)、解熱などに用いられていた。
