Ipoh - Ipoh (English spelling)

Ipoh is the capital of Perak State on the west coast of the Malay Peninsula in mainland Malaysia. It has a population of 566,211 (2000). It is located in the upper reaches of the Kinta River Valley, at the western foot of the peninsula's mountain range. The Kinta Valley is one of Malaysia's leading tin-producing areas, and Ipoh developed as its center. There are many ponds and marshes scattered around the city, which are the remains of tin mines. As the center of tin trading, Ipoh is a lively commercial city, and many wealthy Chinese merchants live there. It is a passing point on the Peninsular Railway, and to the east lies the Cameron Plateau, a famous resort area.

マレーシア本土、マレー半島西岸のペラク州の州都。人口56万6211（2000）。半島脊梁(せきりょう)山脈の西麓(せいろく)、キンタ川河谷上流に位置する。キンタ河谷はマレーシア有数の錫(すず)の生産地で、イポーはその中心として発達した。市の周辺には錫の採掘跡である多数の池沼が散らばる。錫取引の中心で商況活発であり、華僑(かきょう)の富商の居住も多い。半島縦貫鉄道の通過地で、東方には休養地として有名なカメロン高原が展開する。
