Epidonia - Epidonia

Japanese:
Epidonia - Epidonia
A moss in the family Erigeronaceae (illustration). It is distributed separately between North America and East Asia, but the populations in both regions are distinguished by subspecies. The East Asian subspecies is widely distributed from Siberia to Indonesia, but in Japan it is particularly common in volcanic regions. It grows in colonies on rock walls in shady places, forming large, glossy mats. The stems are 1 to 3 cm long and bear numerous leaves in two regular rows. The leaves are lanceolate, with the central vein biased toward the back, and the abdomen is divided into two parts that tightly embrace the stem. This makes the leaves resemble shrimp shells.
