The capital of the Society Islands in French Polynesia, South Pacific. Also known as Papeete. The commercial, transportation and tourist center on the northwest coast of Tahiti. There is an international airport nearby. The city is the headquarters of the Center for Nuclear Testing in the Pacific (CEP), and in 1995, anti-French protests rose up when nuclear testing resumed at Mururoa Atoll.
