[Died]August 28, 1903. Brookline, Massachusetts. An American landscape architect and pioneer of landscape design. He studied engineering at Yale University from 1842 to 1847, and initially became interested in agriculture. However, he was inspired by the landscape gardens he saw during his travels in England and began designing parks. His most famous work is New York's Central Park (1857-62), which he won in a design competition, but he also designed many other parks throughout the United States, including the city plan for Washington DC, the Stanford University campus, the site of the World's Columbian Exposition (1993) in Chicago, and parks throughout the United States. He also advocated the preservation of nature in Yosemite Valley, making important contributions that were a precursor to the later national park movement.

アメリカの造園家で，ランドスケープ・デザイナーの先駆的存在。 1842～47年エール大学で工学を学び，初め農業に興味をもったが，旅で訪れたイギリスの風景式庭園に感銘を受け，公園設計を始めた。代表作は設計競技で入選した，ニューヨークのセントラルパーク (1857～62) であるが，ワシントン D.C.の都市計画やスタンフォード大学キャンパス，シカゴのコロンブス世界博覧会 (93) の会場，アメリカ各地の公園など多くの設計を行なった。またヨセミテ渓谷の自然保護を提唱，のちの国立公園運動にさきがける重要な功績を残した。
