Born: April 26, 1822, Hartford [Died]August 28, 1903. Brookline, Massachusetts. An American landscape architect and pioneer of landscape design. He studied engineering at Yale University from 1842 to 1847, and initially became interested in agriculture. However, he was inspired by the landscape gardens he saw during his travels in England and began designing parks. His most famous work is New York's Central Park (1857-62), which he won in a design competition, but he also designed many other parks throughout the United States, including the city plan for Washington DC, the Stanford University campus, the site of the World's Columbian Exposition (1993) in Chicago, and parks throughout the United States. He also advocated the preservation of nature in Yosemite Valley, making important contributions that were a precursor to the later national park movement.
