Dutch painter and printmaker. Born in Haarlem. A pupil of the landscape painter Gillis van Coninxloo (1544-1607). Following his teacher's example, he painted Dutch landscapes with low horizons and flat landscapes in the distance, using delicate and deep nuanced colours, but also showed a distinctive style of fantastical landscapes with mountain motifs. He is particularly famous for his approximately 60 copperplate prints of fantastical landscapes, which are said to have inspired Rembrandt. In printmaking, he is said to have been the first to try the method of colour printing copperplate prints onto cloth, and the aquatint technique. However, his unusual style and technical experiments were not understood by his contemporaries, and he is said to have died in poverty in The Hague. 風景画家コニンクスローGillis van Coninxloo(1544―1607)の弟子。
